The Metcalfe by Gray Collection Overview
First Impressions
Walking into The Metcalfe by Gray Collection, you immediately get that boutique hotel vibe — it’s polished without being stuffy, and there’s something refreshingly intimate about the whole place. The lobby has this modern elegance that feels distinctly Canadian, if that makes sense, with clean lines and warm touches that make you want to linger. Honestly, after staying at a few cookie-cutter chain hotels in Ottawa, this four-star property was exactly the kind of place I was hoping to find.
Perfect Downtown Location
You know what really struck me? The location is absolutely spot-on — I mean, you’re literally in the heart of everything that matters in Ottawa. From the hotel, Parliament Hill is just a pleasant walk away, and the ByWard Market (which, trust me, you’ll want to explore) is practically next door. The fact that couples rate the location 9.5 out of 10 doesn’t surprise me at all — there’s something romantic about being able to stroll along the Rideau Canal or pop into cozy cafés without needing to figure out transit. Plus, having parking available right on-site is honestly a game-changer in downtown Ottawa, where finding a spot can be a real headache.
The Room Experience
My room had that boutique hotel charm I was hoping for — thoughtfully designed with quality furnishings that actually felt comfortable, not just Instagram-worthy. The bed was genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathroom had those little touches that make you feel pampered without going overboard. What I really appreciated was how quiet everything was, despite being right downtown — the windows do a great job blocking out street noise, so you can actually get a good night’s sleep.
Dining and Amenities
The on-site restaurant serves up solid contemporary cuisine with a Canadian twist — nothing too fancy, but well-executed dishes that hit the spot after a day of exploring the city. I actually ended up eating there twice because it was just so convenient, and the service was consistently friendly without being overly formal. The hotel also has a small fitness center that’s perfectly adequate if you need to squeeze in a workout, though honestly, with all the walking you’ll do exploring Ottawa, you might not need it.
Why Guests Love It
Look, there are plenty of places to stay in Ottawa, but The Metcalfe strikes that sweet spot between location, comfort, and character that’s surprisingly hard to find. It’s the kind of place where business travelers feel at home, but couples also find it romantic enough for a weekend getaway — which explains those stellar location ratings. The staff genuinely seems to care about your experience, and there’s something refreshing about a hotel that feels distinctly local rather than like it could be anywhere in the world. If you want to be in the thick of things without sacrificing comfort or dealing with the chaos of a massive hotel, this is your spot.
Early hotels booking in Ottawa secures Canada Day fireworks, river cruise seats, and chef’s table dinners in heritage mansions.

The impeccable and friendly service of the staff. Our housekeeper on the 5th floor was lovely and helpful all week, as were the front desk and restaurant staff (hurrah for the bartenders who made great lattes with big smiles on each morning!). The lobby plants were stunning as well, and the beds more comfortable than mine at home.
