It’s a three-star property, but honestly, it feels more polished than that rating might suggest. The lobby isn’t huge or flashy — it’s clean, contemporary, and gets you checked in without any fuss. What struck me right away was how quiet it felt despite being right in the heart of Ottawa‘s downtown core.

The Location Sweet Spot

Here’s the thing about Albert Street — you’re literally a five-minute walk from Parliament Hill, which is pretty incredible when you think about it. I mean, you can grab coffee and be staring at the Peace Tower before most people have even left their hotel. The ByWard Market is right there too, so you’ve got restaurants, pubs, and that weekend farmers market all within easy reach. What I really appreciated was how walkable everything felt — you don’t need to figure out transit or worry about parking downtown because honestly, most of what you’ll want to see is right there.

The Room Experience

The room setup is where Sonder really shows its apartment-hotel concept. You get a proper kitchenette with a full-size fridge, which actually makes a difference when you’re staying more than a night or two. The space feels more like a modern studio than a traditional hotel room — there’s a separate seating area, decent storage, and windows that actually open (you’d be surprised how rare that is). The bed was comfortable, and I loved having that extra counter space for spreading out laptops, maps, whatever you’re traveling with.

Daily Rhythms

One thing to know — this isn’t a full-service hotel with a restaurant downstairs or room service. But that’s kind of the point, right? You’ve got the kitchen setup to make your own breakfast, and honestly, with the ByWard Market so close, you’ll want to explore the local coffee shops anyway. The building stays pretty quiet, which I think comes down to the type of travelers it attracts — mostly couples and business folks who appreciate having their own space. The Wi-Fi was solid throughout my stay, and the air conditioning actually worked properly (always a relief in Ottawa summers).

What really works about Sonder Arlo is that balance between independence and convenience. You get the freedom of having your own space with a kitchen, but you’re staying in one of the best spots in downtown Ottawa. I can see why couples rate this place so highly — there’s something nice about being able to make coffee together in the morning before heading out to explore Parliament or walk along the Rideau Canal. It’s not trying to be fancy or luxurious, but it nails the fundamentals: clean, comfortable, well-located, and reasonably priced for what you get in this part of the city.

  We loved our stay here. The room is clean and staff are very friendly. Location is near to the famous destinations. Everything is at a walkable distance. Coffee and extra towels, soap are provided and you can just pick it up from the shelf.

  A very comfortable apartment, great staff and can’t beat the location! We had a few issues with the heating system being a bit erratic and the staff was quick to help us. Otherwise our stay was fantastic – easy instructions to enter the building and apartment, a small but well stocked kitchen, a comfortable hide a bed, nice decor, and two bathrooms was a definite plus with four adults staying!
